“Fuck,” I mutter as my bag slips off my shoulder onto the floor. I’m so far into an emotional spiral that I nearly burst into tears as my scarf and wallet spill out.

Tonight was supposed to be amazing…at least that’s what I convinced myself of this morning. I built it up so much that anything less than perfect would have been a disappointment. And less than perfect, way less, is exactly what I got.

I scoop up all my stuff, then unlock the door, eager for this day to be over. A beer and ten minutes complaining to Holly sounds like a perfect end to this crappy evening.

A strangled scream escapes as the door swings open, revealing a bare-chested Colt. Why do these people keep scaring me?

“What the fuck! Jesus, you scared me. Where’s Holly?” I whisper yell, eyes darting from his chest to eyes, then back to his chest. I can’t not look.

Seriously, when a man works as hard as Colt on his body, it’s like a compliment to look, right? And he’s worked incredibly hard…so hard. The wall of golden muscle and intricate black tattoos make my mouth dry up and my fingers twitch, eager to touch.

He reaches out for the bag clutched in my arms, setting it down next to the door. His features are tense, brows pulled low over his eyes.

“Micah wanted a little quality time with her tonight. I took over for her after supper.” He hesitates, “Are you ok? I thought you’d be out later.”

I move further into the room, letting the door click shut behind me. “I’m ok,” I mutter, carefully sliding past him, careful not to touch his skin. “Where’s your shirt?”

The heat radiating off him is insane. I would never need a heated blanket again if I had him in my bed. Next to me. Touching me.

Colt’s head swings to follow me, but he doesn’t move, forcing me to squeeze past him. “Mia spilled her milk on me.”

Thank you, Mia.

“I need to check on her,” I whisper as I escape to her room. Closing her door softly, I lean against it and give myself a minute to breathe. I don’t know when it started, but lately, I need to prepare myself to spend time with Colt, to build up my defenses. But tonight I’m feeling raw. I mentally give myself my standard pep talk. He’s your friend. Don’t ruin it by being weird. Smarten up and whatever you do, don’t throw yourself at him.

Feeling calmer, I move through the dark room to Mia’s bed. Smiling, I read the words on the stickers stuck to the front of her PJs. Superstar. Smartest Girl in the World. World’s Best Popsicle Eater. They’re huge and glittery and clearly made just for her. They’re not the first stickers Colt’s given her, but they are definitely the largest, by far. The time and effort he put into making them makes me feel a little gooey.

She loves him so much. In two short months, he’s become the most important person in her life…our lives.
